Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

2025-05-30

The Dragon Boat Festival, known in Chinese as Duanwu Festival, is a vibrant and culturally rich festival held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The festival originated in ancient China and has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is mainly held to commemorate Qu Yuan, a highly respected poet and politician during the Warring States Period, who is revered for his patriotism and tragic sacrifice.

Legend has it that Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River to protest corruption and express his loyalty to his country. Local fishermen who admired him rushed to rescue him and threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish from devouring his body. This pious act laid the foundation for the Dragon Boat Festival customs.

The Dragon Boat Race is one of the most exciting customs of the festival, with participating teams working together to row beautifully decorated dragon-shaped boats. The Dragon Boat Race symbolizes the efforts of local people to save Qu Yuan and has developed into a world-renowned competitive sport. During the race, the distinctive rhythm of the drums adds to the passion and vitality of the competition.

Another important custom is making zongzi, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Zongzi are filled with various ingredients such as meat, beans or nuts to commemorate Qu Yuan. Families often gather together to make zongzi to promote unity and tradition.

In addition to dragon boat racing and eating rice dumplings, Dragon Boat Festival customs include hanging herb bags to ward off evil spirits and wearing colorful silk threads to pray for peace. The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time for celebration, but also a time to reflect on the importance of loyalty, sacrifice and cultural heritage.
